Lisa Ross

Lisa is a married mother of two who used her bike to commute to and from work. Having been involved in motorcycle sport from an early age, motorcycling came naturally to Lisa.

A vivacious, outgoing character, Lisa is well known in the racing scene. Ironic, then, that it was not the sport she loves which resulted in her forced retirement, but, instead, her daily commute on a bright June morning in 2003.

Having readied her two boys for school, Lisa had set out from her home and was following her usual route to work. Having come across traffic, Lisa made sure the road was clear to overtake. Checking front and back, she began to carry out the routine manoeuvre to pass the car ahead. As she drew level with the car, it pulled out. Lisa braked and tried to reposition, but there was no place to go. Despite Lisa’s attempts to take evasive action, the car clipped her front wheel. “I wasn’t going too fast, it was just my normal route to work. It doesn’t matter how good a rider you are, another person’s mistake can change your life forever.”

Lisa suffered multiple fractures to both legs and ankles. She was fortunate not to have had her right foot amputated. Her hands were also badly damaged. Lisa is now confined to a wheelchair.

During her lengthy stay in hospital, a friend put Lisa in touch with Digby Brown, personal injury lawyers.  “What I liked about Digby Brown was that they related to me. I wasn’t made to feel like a second-class citizen because I was a biker. They were extremely direct, honest and straight forward and that was a huge breath of fresh air to me.”

As a result of her accident, Lisa has had to completely alter her way of life. “I’ve had to buy an automatic car to get around, put in a stair-lift at home and the bathroom and kitchen adaptations will be next.”

“I also have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which requires private treatment which I can only get in England. This costs £6,000 every time I go for treatment and the Syndrome will only get worse with age.”

Digby Brown raised Lisa’s case in the Court of Session. A Jury Trial was set down for November 2006 . An out of court settlement was achieved in July 2006 when Lisa accepted an offer in excess of £1/2 million.. She now has access to specialist treatment and can begin rebuilding her life.

“I’m glad Digby Brown were there to help me claim my compensation.”

Birgitt Helwig

“The insurance company for the driver at fault initially denied liability. I was then offered only £5,000 despite my serious injury. Digby Brown advised me to raise a court action and pushed hard for a Jury Trial. As a result I was offered £175,000 a week before the Trial date! I am delighted with the award."
