Awards mark Spinal Injuries Awareness Day 2009
For the second year running Digby Brown sponsored the Spinal Injuries Scotland Annual Awards
lunch on Friday 15th May 2009 to mark Spinal Injuries Awareness Day.
Digby Brown’s own Robert Swanney commented:”The event recognises those who have made an
outstanding contribution to Spinal Injuries Scotland over the years.”
This year’s worthy recipients were:
“Volunteer of the Year” – Keira Proctor
Since 2005 Keira has been a regular volunteer visiting inpatients at the Queen Elizabeth
National Spinal Injuries Unit at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital where she gives information,
advice and support to those who have suffered a spinal cord injury as well as to their family and
friends. The charity would simply not function without its dedicated group of volunteers overseen
by peer support manager, Dougy Johnstone. He said: “What is particularly impressive is that Keira
is not exactly “handy” to Glasgow as she lives in Dunoon. Her trip involves the ferry crossing
between her home town and Gourock as well as a thirty mile drive. There have been occasions
when due to bad weather, the ferry can’t sail; but Keira will drive the long way round – a 70 mile
trip so as not to let others down. Keira herself suffered a spinal cord injury in car accident aged
19 and she is now confined to a wheelchair. This award recognises the lengths that she often has to
go to and her ongoing dedication to helping others.”
“Supporter of the Year” – The Diced Cap Trust
This award recognises the ongoing support given to Spinal Injuries Scotland by the Diced Cap
Trust and specifically its chairman, Gordon Townson. Formed in 1990, The Diced Cap Trust is a
charitable organisation run by serving and retired members of Grampian Police. Since its inception
it has raised and distributed over £1 million - a truly extraordinary sum – and Spinal Injuries
Scotland has been one of many grateful recipients. These donations have enabled the charity to
maintain its standard of service provision. Adrian O’Donnell, chairman of Spinal Injuries Scotland
said: “Gordon is the prime mover in maintaining the Trust’s support and we look forward to
continuing our long association and indeed friendship with him and the Trust for many years to
come.”
“Contribution to the Spinal Cord Injured community” – Lynn Newborn
The 2009 award goes to Aberdeen-based Lynn Newborn of ConocoPhillips. Lynn has been the
driving force behind the continued success of the annual Oil and Gas Quiz held every March
simultaneously in Aberdeen and London. Adrian O’Donnell, chairman of Spinal Injuries Scotland said:
“Her seemingly boundless energy is infectious and ensures that the evening goes without a hitch.
She has fulfilled this role tirelessly for many years now and it is all the more remarkable that
her full-on work life sees her travelling frequently between Aberdeen and Norway, so where she
manages to find the time for to create a successful event is anyone’s guess. We salute her.”
The event took place at the Old Course Hotel, St Andrews.
