Accidents at work
Whether you work in an office, a shop or in industry, workplace accidents are all too common.
Accidents at work are not confined to the sort of jobs which are commonly regarded as dangerous
such as construction work or heavy industry. An employee can sustain serious injury by tripping
over something, by slipping on a wet floor, by trying to lift a heavy item or by using an
unsuitable piece of equipment.
While you are at work your employer has a duty to provide you with a safe place of work, safe
equipment, a safe system of working and adequate training and instruction. Your
employer is also responsible for ensuring that the other people you work with also behave
appropriately and do not cause accidents. Increasingly, various statutes and regulations
govern the health and safety regimes within workplaces. If your employer breaches any of these
statutory duties, this may give rise to a claim by employees who have been injured as a result of
that breach.
