Headway UK held their Annual Conference and AGM on 6th to 8th July 2012 at East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham. Kathleen McMonagle, Digby Brown’s Client Support Manager, was invited by Headway to run a workshop on Welfare Reform. Kathleen chose to discuss the changes to Employment Support Allowance (ESA) and in particular the work capability assessment. The work capability assessment determines whether someone claiming ESA is incapable of work.

Kathleen said “The work capability assessment can be a minefield for people with brain injury. The way the questions are worded on the DWP’s Limited Capability For Work Questionnaire can be misleading, and often, the assessment itself does not go into enough detail with the claimant to properly determine how their brain injury affects their day to day life. I thought it was important to give people some practical tips on how to approach the assessment to make sure that they give a true reflection on how their injuries and disability affected their day to day life.”

Feedback from the Workshop has been extremely positive. Attendees commented on how useful they found it and felt they were better equipped to go through the assessment process.
