Over 300 people at Head Injury Information Day Edinburgh

Head Injury Information Day (HIID) - Edinburgh

We were delighted to welcome over 300 guests to our Head Injury Information Day in Edinburgh held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel on 29th May 2019.

This is the third year we have held the event in Edinburgh, which continues to go from strength to strength. The theme this year was ‘Overcoming Obstacles’ with speakers focussing on the various difficulties often faced following a brain injury and their experiences on how to overcome them.

People were able to listen to a number of inspirational speakers about overcoming behavioural problems, discussing issues claiming Personal Independence Payment (PiP) and hearing about the day in a life of an ABI survivor – to name just a few.

There were 28 exhibitors at this year’s event from a range of services including: Edinburgh Headway Group, Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust, Care for Carers, Disability Information Scotland, Lothian Centre for Inclusive Living (LCiL), Neural Pathways and Scottish Nursing Guild. All of the exhibitors were there to share information about the services and support available to someone following a serious brain injury.

The day ended with a panel discussion featuring:

- Dr Alasdair FitzGerald - Consultant in Neurorehabilitation & Clinical Lead at Astley Ainslie Hospital

- Dr Sarah Gillanders - Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist at Case Management Services Ltd

- Lorraine Allan - Trustee and Unpaid Carer at Edinburgh Headway Group

- Paula Gribben - Senior Occupational Therapist and Community Liaison Discharge Manager at Murdostoun Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Neurological Care Centre.

The feedback from those that attended was fantastic, “A most enjoyable day and the speakers were fantastic, very inspirational” and “Without your help, we brain injury survivors would not be as well informed”.

Kirsten Smith, CSR Manager at Digby Brown, reflected on the day saying: “It is a privilege to be able to facilitate these information days to help bring brain injury survivors together, along with their family, friends and carers. We truly hope all who attended enjoyed the selection of speakers and discovered the further support available to them locally to aid their recovery and improve day-to-day living. We are already looking forward to next year’s head injury information days and hope our attendees are too.”
