Digby Brown’s Position on Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Applications/Assessments

Introduction to Generative AI (GenAI)

Generative Artificial Intelligence, often referred to as GenAI, is a category of artificial intelligence technology that is designed to create, analyse, or modify digital content. This includes, but is not limited to, the generation, editing, or analysis of text, prose, mathematical formulae, computer code, images, video, and audio files. GenAI systems are also capable of answering questions posed in natural language by drawing upon the information they have processed. Notable examples of GenAI tools include ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

Purpose of This Statement

This statement has been produced by Digby Brown to clarify the firm's approach to the use of Generative AI in the context of recruitment, specifically regarding application forms and assessment centres for summer placements and traineeships.

Acceptable Uses of GenAI Tools

The use of GenAI tools by candidates is considered acceptable only when it does not compromise, or attempt to compromise, the integrity of Digby Brown’s assessments or applications. Candidates may utilise GenAI tools in the following circumstances:

  • Where their use does not undermine the candidate’s ability to demonstrate the required knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary to meet the assessment standards for the role.
  • Where the assessment or role specification explicitly permits the use of such tools.

Whenever the use of GenAI is permitted, candidates must always acknowledge its use. Furthermore, candidates should be mindful of the limitations of GenAI, such as potential bias and the risk of generating inaccurate or misleading information (hallucinations).

Disabled candidates, as well as those with additional support needs, may use assistive technologies that require the integration of GenAI to function, provided that the use of such technology does not compromise the integrity of Digby Brown’s assessments or applications.

Unacceptable Uses of GenAI Tools

It is essential that candidates’ assessed work reflects their own knowledge, skills, and understanding, and that they can demonstrate independent competence. Inappropriate use of GenAI tools may undermine this requirement and result in the candidate’s work failing to meet the Firm’s criteria.

Candidates must not submit AI-generated outputs or ideas as their own in assessment tasks that contribute towards securing a role with Digby Brown. Such actions would constitute malpractice and may lead to disqualification from the recruitment process.
