Jargon is gibberish – who needs that?!

Some professions are so specialised it seems these workers speak their own language.

Doctors. Car mechanics. IT experts. Scientists. Trades people.

How many times have you dealt with them and wondered what they were talking about? Did you feel afraid to ask them to repeat something? Did you even feel like you couldn’t ask them?

In many ways the legal profession is the same. Some might consider it the most confusing.

Yes, as expert solicitors we need to be well-versed in legal jargon. We use Latin phrases, communicate with our counterparts, the appointed solicitors from the Insurance company in a specific way using terminology which isn’t every day language. We need to speak what might sound like another language. But that is what we do with others who speak this language, it’s is just not necessary when we talk to our clients and explain what is happening.

When it comes to communicating with you we will use plain English because although the law is complicated, speaking about it doesn’t have to be.

At Digby Brown we understand you’re speaking to us because you’ve recently suffered a trauma. Whether minor or serious, the aftermath of a traumatic event can bring you into contact with several formal authorities like police, medical staff, insurers or employers – all of whom speak their own language too.

It’s enough to make anyone feel bombarded and baffled trying to keep up and make sense of it all.

That’s why we will always do our best to make sure you leave every meeting, end every phone call or read every letter knowing what is happening and what the next steps are. And If there is anything at all you’re not sure about then please know you can ask us any questions. And yes occasionally we may have to use a legal term so please don’t hesitate to ask us to explain.

That’s why communicating with you in plain English is about more than making sure you know what’s happening with your claim. It’s about making a complicated legal process, simple to understand.

Oh – and although we talk about speaking “in plain English” we have in-house staff who speak Spanish, Italian, German, Polish, French, Russian, Romanian and Urdu. If you speak a different language than those listed we also have access to the best translators in the nation. So even if you’re a foreign national we can always make sure your legal support is free of jargon.
